Works fine how ever has a hard time reading small type and deciding what is an i or an l and a or an s. It worked better in excellent light conditions. but still had distress with those letters.
Brilliant Product for Text scanning

I am extremely pleased with the product, helps me to take notes from lot of text books in to a word document. Being pressed with time I was frustuated with the time I was spending on hand writing the notes. Reading the reviews here I was not sure what I was getting into but after a week of using this I cannot imagine going back to handwriting notes. I installed the software from the CD, hooked the pen to the USB and did initial calibration as ponited by the software and I was set, it takes few tries to get used to but does get better in few days. Had no software crashes or any problems in Windows Vista. In my opinion this is most usefull for scanning a line at a time, specifically text and if that is your goal you are set. Symbols are challenging but for my MBA text books this has been fantastic.

I tried two of these pens and they sort of worked. I had to thoroughly edit everything that I scanned, but overall I was pleased with the scanning capability.
My real issue with the product, and the reason that I returned both pens, was that the pens constantly disconnected from my computer. They would remain physically plugged into the USB port, but they would just stop scanning and a message would pop up on my computer screen telling me the pen had disconnected.
The first one I had would disconnect about every 5 minutes. I assumed it was defective so exchanged it. The second one would sometimes disconnect after I had scanned only 2 words. When it disconnected that frequently it was pointless. I could have typed everything out in the time I spent unplugging and replugging the device.
NO CUSTOMER SERVICE

I bought this scanner with fantastic excitement, and the first one worked well right out of the box…for about a week. Mysteriously, it quit recognizing ANY text…so I called IRIS customer service 4 times (could only leave a message) and sent several e-mails…and they haven’t responded to ANY of these efforts (it’s been four weeks.)
I returned the scanner to Amazon (which sent a new one ASAP…very impressive) and the second one didn’t recognize any text, regardless of settings. I am now returning that for a full refund and will never buy from Iris again because they have NO customer service.

i bought this pen for my employees to use in record reviews. it works fantastic and they continue to thank me for saving them from carpal tunnel! no more typing!!
Practice, practice, practice…I don’t have the time.

I read the other reviews saying it would take practice to master the pen. I practiced for a couple of hours and still was not able to master it. Why would I need to practice something that should work automatically? I am usedt to the plug and play world where the equipment starts working properly instantly. I don’t have time to “master” this piece of equipment so I am sending it back. I wish there was an independent review of the pen and software letting me know what to expect but I couldn’t find one.

It was real simple to setup and you can start scanning straight away. The word recognition capability is between moderate and brilliant depending on the paper surface you’re scanning from.
One flaw though, the scanner is unable to interpret words from a paper surface that is not perfectly flat.
Moreover, its a wonderful time-saving tool. I give it 4 stars.
