The device is very portable, so your not stuck typing in 200 hard-drive serial numbers by hand next time your on-site collecting evidence. The device appears as a keyboard, so when you scan something it act as if you typed the data in using the keyboard. The device is configured by scanning different bar codes. I configured the product to be as universal as possible, so I did not need to worry as much about the great variety of bar codes(there are a lot of bar code types). Note, this device does not scan the new 3-D codes used by some shippers. I ended up having to buy bar code printing software (this product does not come with software to generate bar codes).
