    Pleasantly Surprised

I bought this after reading a lot of reviews on this product and the competition. While I’ve only had it a few days, I am pleasantly surprised at how accurately it captures the scanned text. You just have to keep your hand steady and learn not to release preasure until you are at the end of the line. I use it primarily to scan Russian text, which I paste into an online translator. I tried ECTACO’s own translation software on a trial basis and found it much inferior to what you can use for free online. The best online translator I have found is “IMTRANSLATOR.” Keep in mind that none of the electronic translators will provide perfect results, but rather give you a general thought of what is being communicated. The English text that I scanned with the C-Pen was error-free provided I kept a steady hand. I would certainly recommend based on my few days of use.

I bought this while I was Iraq to end up my classes and could not use this at all. I made a compl… Read moreaint to C-Pen and I reckon you guys and I was never satisfied. It is now passed warranty time because I couldn’t reach you guys while I was oversea blaming how reckless to spend more than 100 dollars. Obviously nobody ordered from the area in Iraq where I stayed for 12 month. I didn’t have manufacturing number? so could not compaint further to C-Pen. I even promised my kids to bring this fascinating device for their study. I will compaint this matter to Amazon as well. No compatibility to 64bit vista computer! That is absolutely outrageous. To find this fact I have to spend several weeks because of geographical condition over there. No written information about compatibility issue on the disc. Want to have your company’s best advice. It is on my desk doing nothing. So disappointed!

Updated on Dec 24 2009. I even bought 2 Net books for my kids with XP edition to be on safe side! I tried to use CPEN with my desk top several times. Desk top is 32bit Vista. Doesn’t work! I am going to have my classes soon. Give my money back, please! Don’t want to spend my precious time. I am so disappointed! Sent email to CPEN but nothing but, “NO TOO LATE!” Give me a break!

    Fantastic item

Works fantastic. I am about to buy a second one to use at home. Saves me the distress of having to transcribe long passages from textbooks or other material into my documents.

    Hard to use

The circumference of the pen, where it needs to be held, is so huge that its very hard to hold the pen AND keep pressing a button (right next to where you are holding the pen) every time one needs to scan. The non circular construction of the pen (its flat) makes it even more hard to work with.

Ectaco C-Pen 20: It’s more helpful than not

I bought my Ectaco C-Pen 20 Handheld Scanner about a month ago when I became aware of two things: 1) it’s existence and review by my professor, and 2) it’s discounted price at around $120 here on Amazon.

As a grad student about to end one degree and go into post grad studies, I know I could use some real help in my research and writing. After my GGBTS professor’s review of this product, I realized I could really use this.

I bought it, and I now use it regularly with my research. Not only can I scan quotes quickly into a paper, but I can also quickly take down the bibliographic information on books I’m using or am interested in. The scanner usually only makes mistakes when I scan at a weird height (such as not centering the text), when the text is too large (and it scans some pretty large font sizes), or when I scan it incorrect (such as accidentally moving too quick and all it can grab is gobbedly-gook). I LIKE that it can really scan my quotes and bibliographic data as text – real text that can be went from one place to another, highlighted, italicized, etc. It takes a small getting used to, but that does not detract from my appreciation for a excellent product.

I recommend you buy this scanner if you’re doing large amounts of research – either as a student, journalist, writer, editor, or any other setting where you use a lot of quotes or need to keep track of a lot of data.

    Impressed

Ok i am impressed. The product works very well and you can scan the text quite quickly. This is goign to save me loads of time no more messy handwritten (unsearchable) notes!

One thing, the driver CD is place in the box kitty corner to save on packaging. My cd was a bit warped or something from the poor packaging design and it took 4-5 attempts to get it to run properly. You can probably find the software online anyway. Pen itself was packaged safely.

Don’t buy this if you have a mac!!!!!
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
When I got this product, which was approximately four hours ago, I proceeded to spend four hours trying to figure out how to install it on my Mac. The install CD is only for PCs, and it was bent so it made a nasty loud buzzing noise in my drive. I tried to download the Mac install program from C-Pen’s website, and my computer installed a picture of the pen, but wont recognize that it’s plugged in. In other words, four hours have gotten me nowhere. Chintzy instructions, bent CD, multi-step install process that is very disjunctive. This product sucks. For the money I paid, I expect much better from a company
